Working as a Senior Operations Forester for Huber Resources Corp in Old Town, Maine, Ted Shina manages about 100,000 acres (40,469 hectares) of forestland. In his role, Shina must delicately balance the needs of landowners, the environment and wildlife, and the public. For his stewardship of the landscape, Shina was named Forester of the Year by the Maine Forest Products Council (MFPC) in 2011.

A leader in sustainable forestry, HRC manages more than 700,000 acres (283,279 hectares) of timberlands for third-party landowners, as well as Huber-owned land. The Maine Forest Products Council, a trade association representing landowners, mills, loggers and other stakeholders in the forest products industry, is involved in educational, communication and legislative activities. MFPC honored Shina for environmental education outreach, forest management for a wide variety of clients, work on behalf of trade organizations and participation in logger training and safety.

Shina is an expert in all areas of sustainable forest management, which includes trees, soil, water and wildlife. He practices silviculture, the art and science of growing the healthiest and most valuable trees to meet the objectives of landowners while ensuring that the forests remain a resource for generations to come. He begins with a management plan, recommending what actions will produce the highest yield and looking for the best areas to harvest in the most responsible way.

Shina considers himself a “sunlight manager.” Based on his 30 years of experience, Shina goes into a forest and opens it up to support the trees he wants to regenerate—letting in just enough sunlight to promote growth of the most valuable trees.

Although he uses the latest technological advances in managing the forests, including GIS (Geographic Information Systems), GPS (Global Positioning Systems), computer modeling and digital aerial photography, Shina believes there’s no substitute for shoe leather—getting out in the forest to make sure he’s harvesting the right trees and leaving the right ones to grow.

CP Kelco started up a new mechanical vapor recompression (MVR) evaporator unit in May 2012 at its pectin manufacturing plant in Limeira, Brazil. The MVR equipment is the centerpiece of an ongoing expansion project that ultimately will increase the facility’s production capacity by more than 50 percent.

Scheduled for completion in 2015, the capacity expansion will significantly increase the facility’s high methoxy (HM) pectin capacity, permitting CP Kelco to support pectin demand with a sustainable and cost-effective raw material source, utilizing the orange peel that is readily available locally.

Along with supporting CP Kelco’s growth plans, the new MVR unit produces significant energy savings for the plant. The technology enables evaporation at lower temperatures, reducing the energy required to manufacture finished products. The MVR project also allowed CP Kelco to convert a waste stream into a recycled product. A previously-used evaporator unit has been repurposed so that it now concentrates a waste product from the manufacturing process, turning it into organic fertilizer. The fertilizer, called FERPEC, is sold to area farmers—effectively eliminating a waste stream.

Pectin, a gum (hydrocolloid) derived from the peel of citrus fruits, is used as a gelling and stabilization agent in food, pharmaceuticals and personal care products.

<img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-457" title="Huber donates land to state park in Maine" src="../wp-content/uploads/2012/01/LakeKDonation_0213_.jpg" alt="" width="320" align="right" style="margin-left: 15px;" /

Huber’s timber management business, Huber Resources Corp (HRC), donated approximately 143 acres (58 hectares) of unspoiled land to Baxter State Park in Maine on January 12, 2012. HRC presented the gift to representatives from the Governor’s office and the Baxter State Park Authority at the state capitol in Augusta, Maine.

The donation represents the largest remaining tract of privately owned land around Katahdin Lake in Baxter State Park. Given the land’s unique setting and pristine beauty, it is difficult to accurately assess its value in dollars. However, Huber believes that the land’s true value is immeasurable as it adds lush forests and magnificent vistas of Mount Katahdin, Maine’s highest
mountain, to Baxter State Park. The gift also includes a sand beach known as Church Beach—named after the acclaimed American artist Frederick Church, who painted scenes of Lake Katahdin in the 1800s.

Huber family members first bought land in Maine in the 1940s after enjoying many vacations in the state. The family believes that this donation includes one of the first pieces of land purchased by the Hubers in Maine.

“This gift is a wonderful addition to the Park and in perfect keeping with the vision of Park founder and former Maine Governor Percival Baxter,” says Jensen Bissell, Director of Baxter State Park. “Remaining ‘Forever Wild,’ this portion of the historic Keep Lot will provide backcountry recreation opportunities to generations of Mainers.”

The land was originally part of approximately 200 acres deeded in 1860 by the State of Maine to Reverend Marcus Keep, a missionary and avid hiker who cleared the first trail to the top of Mount Katahdin in 1848.

The gift is a direct outgrowth of one of Huber’s core values: responsible stewardship of the environment. The company understands the importance of preserving and protecting the world’s natural resources for future generations. That is why the donation to Baxter State Park is just the latest in a long list of land donations that Huber has made in Maine. In 1976, Huber donated the Crystal Bog Preserve, which is made up of 4,000 acres (1,620 hectares) of peatland in the towns of Crystal and Sherman. That same year, Huber donated more than 600 acres (243 hectares) near the town of Patten, including land along the Seboeis River at Seboeis Gorge. In 1991, Huber made a gift of 265 acres (107 hectares) of wetlands called Marble Fen, which is home to diverse vegetation and rare plant species.

While Huber has donated or sold many of its timberlands, the company continues to manage more than a half million acres (202,000 hectares) of timberlands for other landowners through Huber Resources, which is based in Old Town, Maine. The business focuses on increasing the sustainable value of forests by using responsible forestry practices, such as forest regeneration and sustained yield harvesting.

Top photo: Commissioner William Beardsley and Doug Denico, Baxter State Park Authority Chair accept a framed photo of the donated land from Sherry Huber, Peter Triandafillou, Vice President, Huber Resources Corp, and Robert Currie, Vice President, Chief Communications & Public Affairs Officer of the J.M. Huber Corporation.

Above photo: Huber’s donation includes about 4,000 feet of frontage along Katahdin Lake and features a sand beach offering full views of Mt. Katahdin.

Huber Specialty Hydrates, LLC (HSH), a subsidiary of the J.M. Huber Corporation, announced on April 2, 2012, that it had purchased the assets of the specialty hydrate flame retardant business of Almatis, Inc., located in Bauxite, Arkansas. HSH will manufacture precipitated alumina trihydrate (ATH) for the Fire Retardant Additives (FRA) business unit of Huber Engineered Materials (HEM). The purchase includes the specialty hydrate manufacturing operation located in Bauxite and all product grades under the Hydral® and SpaceRite® brands.

The addition of Huber Specialty Hydrates and its employees is a good strategic fit for HEM. It represents the culmination of an effort that began in 2010, when HEM entered into a tolling arrangement with Almatis to sell, market and provide technical service support for its specialty hydrates. This asset purchase, coupled with HEM’s acquisition of the Kemgard® smoke suppressant product line in August of 2010, expands Huber’s fire retardant additives portfolio. It also builds on Huber’s more than 30-year history as a trusted supplier of non-halogen flame retardants and smoke suppressants.

The Hydral and SpaceRite products will continue to be manufactured in Bauxite. Huber has built strong global relationships with a number of customers seeking specialty hydrate flame retardants. The purchase further expands Huber’s ability to offer customers an extensive array of solutions in this growing market.

Three winners—one from each of Huber’s engineered materials businesses—received the inaugural Mike Huber Award in March of 2012. The award represents the highest form of employee recognition within Huber and honors the legacy of the late Mike Huber, President and then CEO of the J.M. Huber Corporation from 1957 to 1990 and a member of the Huber Board of Directors until 2000.

The Mike Huber Award is given to the employee teams that best exemplify what it means to live up to the company’s core values, the Huber Principles. The company received 46 entries for the 2011 Mike Huber Award from Huber locations around the world. The leaders of CP Kelco, Huber Engineered Materials (HEM), and Huber Engineered Woods LLC (HEW) helped narrow the field to six nominees. From these, the Huber Management Council (HMC) selected a Gold, Silver and Bronze winner. The final selections were reviewed and approved by the Huber Board of Directors and Huber Family Council Board.

The Gold-level award went to a team from CP Kelco’s office in Tokyo, Japan, for “Response to Earthquake, Tsunami and Radiation Exposure”. When Japan experienced its worst earthquake in modern history on March 11, 2011, this team responded immediately by putting in place a number of actions to support their employees, distributors, customers and communities.

Silver was awarded to the HEM plant in Etowah, Tennessee, for “For Excellence in Customer Service.” This team worked around the clock in 12-hour shifts for six days (including an entire weekend) to help one of its customers safely resolve a problem that had nothing to do with Huber’s products or equipment.

Bronze winners hail from the HEW plant in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, for “Quality Improvement: ‘Did Huber Win?’” Team members were organized into four Mini Mills, and all employees at the site supported a comprehensive process improvement plan. Broken Bow improved product quality and customer satisfaction while maintaining an injury-free workplace in 2011.
